Pink has been used as pigments for art, fabrics, pottery, etc throughout time without much regard to gender until the 20th century. Hot pink as a pigment is actually a relatively new phenomenon, though. The Italian fashion designer, Schiaparelli, introduced it in his 1937 line of designs touting a bold, vivid pink as a new mainstream color.
